Places To Eat

Sunday Roast at The Guinness Social, Tianzifang

This is by no means a complete list. If anything, it's the tip of the iceberg. I don't eat out that often these days, preferring to cook at home for myself and my family. It's both healthier and cheaper. But I have tried to mention places I still go to and enjoy on those occasions that I do eat out. It's worth noting that the food and beverage scene in Shanghai changes very quickly as new places open and old places close down, so it's worth checking before setting off to dine at any of these places. Also, places that were great at one point can quickly go downhill as a result of many factors such as change of ownership, partner disagreements, etc. In other words, your mileage may vary.

Honourable Mentions

There are too many restaurants to mention and it depends on what you want, but other places I quite like include Pasha (Turkish), Klay (fantastic modern Indian by a British-Indian chef), Tomatito (Spanish tapas restaurant near Xintiandi, great lunch option but also for dinner).

Food Tours

If my humble list doesn't really cut the mustard and you would like a personal guided food tour from someone who knows about food, Chris St Cavish is a former chef and food writer who knows his food and has lived here since 2005. He offers private food tours for around 1200 RMB per person which includes all the food and transportation.
